It’s trans awareness week everyone so here’s a guide.
Here’s the transgender flag:
FTM and MTF can be found offensive by trans individuals, while others may present themselves with such terms. FTM: Female to male. MTF: Male to female.
Since transgender people are the gender they identify with it’s not hard to see, though I see this mistake a lot, that transgender women identify as women and transgender men identify as men.
Nonbinary means a gender outside the gender binary i.e. male and female.
Nonbinary folks are transgender as they do not conform to their birth sex. Though, they have another flag to use as well as the one above.
Here is the nonbinary flag:
Common identities under the umbrella term that is nonbinary are:
Gender queer (can also be used as an umbrella term)
Demi gender- having a partial connection to a gender
Gender fluid- having a gender that varies (often hard to pin down)
Gender flux- having a gender that gradually changes to another gender
Third gender- a gender that is not male or female
Agender- not having a gender
Bigender- being two genders either at once or at different times (any two genders)
Each of these identities comes with its own flag.
Most nonbinary people appreciate the use of they/them pronouns, but may ask for others or have changing requests.
Transgender people have a hard enough time with their dysphoria without constant purposeful misgendering and dead-naming. Respect people’s identities no matter how they sound to you.
Quick note:
Transgender people may present however they please and after you are informed of their identification, pronouns, and name, use them.
